Description
Papua New Guinea is a rare cannabis landrace from the Goroka Highlands, one of the world's most remote and culturally diverse regions.
Although cannabis is not indigenous to Papua New Guinea, tropical psychoactive Sativas were introduced during the 1960s and gradually spread throughout the country. Over the following decades, these populations became naturalized, adapting to the warm, humid tropical climate and the cultivation practices and preferences of local growers.
The Goroka Highlands sit at around 5,000 ft (1,600 m) elevation near 6° south of the equator. This highland environment has very consistent day length and intense sunlight, with minimal variation in daylight length throughout the year.
This accession represents an exceptional example of the rich genetic diversity of tropical Sativas found in the region. Of all the tropical landraces Ace Seeds has worked with, it is undoubtedly the most extreme in terms of plant size and flowering duration.
The preservation project involved open pollination among 70 different parental plants, with the objective of maintaining the broadest possible genetic diversity while identifying the most desirable female specimens. The offspring of these selected females are presented here.
Growth is exceptionally vigorous, with outdoor plants capable of reaching an impressive 5–6 meters in height. Highly productive and displaying an excellent flower-to-leaf ratio, this Sativa undergoes an unusually long, progressive flowering cycle of 18–24 weeks. Its large, airy, foxtail floral structures are naturally suited to humid environments and gradually develop into substantial colas.
The population exhibits remarkable uniformity, with no extreme variations between individuals. It also maintains a balanced ratio of male to female plants, an uncommon characteristic among tropical landraces, along with excellent sexual stability, even under indoor cultivation conditions.
From a genetic perspective, PNG Sativas belong to the maritime Southeast Asian and Pacific group, occupying a transitional position between Indonesian and Melanesian cannabis populations.
Its distinctive terpene profile combines lemony, sweet-and-sour, creamy and floral notes. Together with its powerful effects and unmistakable character, it brings to mind the finest classic Thai sativas and the most intense, mind-blowing Hangkrarok expressions available today.
PNG has an exceptionally powerful, complex and long-lasting high, unfolding in several distinct stages over 3–4 hours or more. The onset can be overwhelming, even provoking anxiety, before developing into an intensely cerebral, expansive and stimulating experience. Deep introspection combines with remarkable mental clarity, opening the way to an unusually intense exploration of the psyche.
As the effects progress, the experience becomes increasingly immersive, unpredictable and psychedelic, with pronounced time distortion, delayed or blurred vision, dizziness, short-term memory loss and a growing sense of separation between body and mind, as though drifting into nonphysical dimensions.
Some individuals experience a more relaxed progression, eventually settling into a final phase of calm detachment, accompanied by a silly grin, red eyes, a visibly wasted expression, an empty mind and increased appetite.
This is a challenging and sometimes disorienting high, particularly for those unfamiliar with the extreme psychoactivity of pure tropical Sativas. The final stage can be mentally exhausting from hours of intense cerebral stimulation.
Cultivation
Papua New Guinea Landrace is best grown outdoors, particularly in hot, tropical or subtropical environments:
- coastal Mediterranean/greenhouse
- Florida
- Southern California/greenhouse
- coastal Arizona
- South Texas
- Southern Louisiana
- U.S. Gulf Coast
- Hawaii
- Australia
- South America - tropical zones
If you attempt to grow indoors, you'll need a proper light source (400-600W HPS is best, or a semi-professional LED lamp 250-400W) and consistent warmth. Indoor flowering time is up to 24 weeks.
