Hangkrarok Champion is a standout expression of the iconic Hangkrarok landrace from Northeast Thailand, widely regarded as one of its most beautiful and authentic representations. This exceptional selection earned first place in the Landrace category at the Grand Final of the Prempavee 1st Ganja Cup 2023/24, cementing its status as a benchmark for traditional Thai Sativa's.
Hangkrarok Champion typically grows in a classic Christmas tree–shaped sativa structure, though pruning can encourage a much bushier form. It performs well in most environments but truly excels outdoors in warm and tropical climates, where it shows impressive resistance to heat, heavy rains, and wind.
Hangkrarok (aka Hang Kra Rog) is the most popular cultivar in Northeast Thailand thanks to its adaptability and ease of cultivation under local conditions. This champion selection, however, can be slightly more demanding if heavily pruned or defoliated (neither of which is recommended).
The vigorous Sativa genetics produce big plants, known to double or even triple in size during the flowering phase.
The terpene profile blends ripe mango and bright citrus with subtle smoky undertones, creating a complex and unmistakably Thai bouquet. The main terpenes are beta myrcene, limonene and alpha-pinene.
Hangkrarok's effects are often described as the closest experience to the legendary high-quality Thai Sticks of the 1960s-70s, something difficult to fully convey to those who haven’t tried it. The experience is nuanced and deeply characteristic, with outcomes strongly influenced by harvest timing and drying and curing techniques.
About Prempavee
Prempavee is a mother and organic farmer from Isaan in northeastern Thailand. Her farm sits at the center of a region that, during the 1960s and 1970s, was once the largest source of what became known as Thai Stick. Contrary to common belief, Thai Stick is not a cannabis strain, but a traditional method of bundling cannabis flowers around thin sticks to make them easier to transport and conceal.
While Thai Sticks themselves have largely disappeared with the advent of modern preservation techniques, the original landrace genetics used to produce them remain alive. These varieties are carefully maintained by Prempavee and more than 2,000 other local farmers. The most widely cultivated landrace in the region is Hang Krarok (aka Hang Kra Rog), meaning “Squirrel Tail,” followed by Hang Suea (“Tiger Tail”), Foitong (“Golden String”), Black Mango, and others.
Prempavee belongs to long-standing farming collectives where entire villages have worked together to safeguard these genetics for generations. Their seeds come from open-pollinated fields, resulting in rich genetic diversity and a wide range of traits. Historically, these Thai landraces were prized by renowned breeders for enhancing terpene profiles, potency, and yields. Today, as legalization in Thailand has introduced many foreign varieties, these traditional Thai Sativa's are becoming increasingly scarce, making their preservation more important than ever.
