Samangan Charas (aka Silky) is our tribute to the hash-plant tradition, shaped by the rugged conditions of highland fields and selected for resin, yield, and balanced effects. This line expresses the classic traits associated with northern Afghan cultivation: dense buds, generous trichome coverage, and a calm, steady Indica character that never feels excessive or mind-numbing.

This was one of our longest breeding projects. It started in the mid-90s after we were gifted seeds by a good friend and globetrotter who toured the Himalayas on his Enfield Bullet 350. Over the following decades, it was an on-and-off project while we continued selecting the finest specimens, adapting them to indoor lighting, and stabilizing desirable traits. Eventually, we succeeded in feminizing the strain so that growers with limited space can also enjoy this true hash plant.

Samangan Province lies in northern Afghanistan near the historic Silk Road, along the foothills of the Hindu Kush and the plains bordering Balkh. At 35-37°N latitude, the region falls under a cold semi-arid climate (BSk classification) with sharp day/night temperature fluctuations throughout the growing season.

Traditional cannabis in Samangan developed under these open-field conditions, where plants are exposed to long hours of direct sunlight and a relatively short autumn. Northern Afghanistan, particularly the regions surrounding Balkh and Samangan, has long been associated with hashish production. Farmers historically selected plants for abundant trichome production and structural strength.

The plants are beginner-friendly and develop a sturdy, upright structure with a large main bud and excellent flowering on lateral branches. The internodes are moderately spaced. Cultivation in organic soil is very straightforward. Samangan Charas performs equally well under white LED or HPS lamps. For best results, we recommend a 200W LED or 400-600W HPS setup. The strain has not been tested under low-light conditions.

Outdoors, this Indica forms a Christmas-tree shape, allowing good airflow and light penetration. A warm, hot, dry, or Mediterranean climate is best if you don't have a greenhouse.

Resin production is a defining feature of Samangan Charas. The buds develop a thick, even layer of sparkling trichomes, making the strain a fine choice for commercial production and extraction methods. As harvest approaches, the calyxes and leaf tips can turn purple, magenta, and indigo, which gives the buds a luxurious touch and excellent bag appeal.

The aroma is classic. Expect earthy, resinous notes layered with dry pine, subtle spice, and a clean, herbal finish. After curing, the profile deepens into a smooth, composed blend of forest resin and warm hash tones.

Our Samangan Charas strain sits a little differently compared to some of the heavier Afghan landraces. Unlike Indica's known for a strong, narcotic body stone that quickly leads to couch-lock, Samangan is more balanced. The effect is relaxing and calming, but not overly sedating. You still feel clear enough to have a conversation, listen to music, or stay present without sinking into a sleepy haze. It’s a soothing kind of Indica high that unwinds the body without completely shutting you down. Great for melting away stress, enjoying lazy afternoons, and gliding into a chilled evening!

Extra seed(s) in each pack: please use them, as not all seeds may germinate due to these particular landrace genetics.

Germinating Seeds

Our organic cannabis seeds are fresh, ripened to perfection and handcrafted. Each batch is pre-tested for germination. They can be easily germinated in seedling soil. In Europe the Compo Sana seedling mix is an excellent choice. In North America some popular brands are Burpee Seed Starting Mix, Promix Organic Pro Seed Starting Mix and Fox Farm Light Warrior Seed Starter.

Please don't make it difficult for the seed embryo to pop out of its shell and invest in quality soil if you are growing organically. Some of the major problems we've seen in cannabis cultivation are peat pellets or jiffy tabs because the acidic pH can inhibit germination. Coco coir bricks and other "homemade bricks" can also cause low germination rates.

Soaking the seeds and other pre-germination methods are not recommended. We accept no responsibility for results if customers insist on germinating in paper tissues or soak their seeds in water.

WARNING: Do NOT lower the pH of your water with acids like "pH-Down" products containing nitrogen or phosphoric acid. These acids are so strong they corrode metals! Using pH-Down products on a regular basis can be fatal when growing in soil and KILL your seedlings. We use cheap vinegar since 35 years to lower pH, its non-toxic and completely harmless for plants. The correct water pH for soil cultivation is 6.2-6.5. Please consult our Water & pH Guide for more info.
