Born in 1945 in Wales, Howard Marks led an extraordinary life, becoming one of the most famous cannabis smugglers of his time. His journey began at Oxford University, where he initially pursued a career in physics but eventually ventured into more unconventional activities. By the 1970s, he had turned to smuggling large quantities of hashish and marijuana.
Howard Marks was known for his intelligence, charm, and wit. For years, he lived a double life under multiple identities (43 aliases, to be exact) to evade law enforcement around the world. His smuggling operations mainly focused on transporting large quantities of hashish from countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan to Europe and the United States. He claimed to have been associated with organizations like the IRA, MI6, and even the Mafia, making him something of a legend in underground circles.
Marks was arrested in 1988 and sentenced to 25 years in prison but served only seven years before his release. Afterward, he redirected his talents towards writing and published his autobiography Mr. Nice, which became a cult classic. In it he details his life of crime, evading the law, and his love for cannabis. The book later inspired a movie starring Rhys Ifans as Marks.
The Beginnings of Mr. Nice Seed Bank
