Mandala #1
Beautiful violet buds are typical for Mandala #1.

Purple Strains

Experience a colourful garden with vibrant hues of red to purple! Here is our compilation of commercially available 'purple strains' and in-between's with beautiful burgundy red or violet hues.

Purple coloration comes from the presence of anthocyanin which is a flavanoid produced by an enzymatic process in the plant. Anthocyanins are known to be powerful antioxidants, and are also thought to possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. This why we are told to eat blueberries, blackberries, and goji berries which contain a high amount of antioxidants.

Some strains turn purple naturally and others due to a drop in temperature, a phenomenon familiar to outdoor growers in the north (fall colours). Low temperature influences anthocyanin accumulation.

The #1 Choice for Early Outdoor: 35°- 55°N

Mandala #1 is a good choice if you are aiming for a quick crop with a sativa effect. We recommend this strain especially for northern climates where harvesting by the end of September is a priority. This strain has two basic phenotypes (characteristic plant types). Approximately 30% of the plants belong to the sativa dominant phenotype and grow in a christmas tree shape. The leaf structure is similar to the indica dominant pheno. Purplish leaf stems and light red stripes along shoots are not uncommon and should not be mistaken for a nutrient deficiency. The young flowering plants have a perfumed woody-herbal fragrance when you rub the stems. Despite the sativa dominance the buds are chunky and the plants are easy to grow. The indica type pheno is apparent through its more squat growth, thick main stem, and larger leaves. Branches are shorter, growing upwards close to the plant (perfect for SOG). The side shoots towards the top are also short and give the head buds a more compact structure. This pheno tends to develop a sweet-spicy smell during early flowering.

Mandala #1 flowers with a spear-shaped head bud of considerable length that makes this a high yielder. Resin output is impressive - also outdoor. The prime head buds are coated with a thick layer of trichomes and glisten brightly in the sun. Some plants develop beautiful dark purple calyxes during mid-flowering: a trait which they inherited from the New Zealand Purple Indica in the paternal line. Harvesting is very simple since the calyx-to-leaf ratio is predominantly high.

Outdoor: This early flowering strain shares the benefits of hardy landrace genetics and a very resinous hybrid to produce robust plants with high bud quality. Mandala #1 impresses with its high cold and pest resistance. The early flowering traits in this cross initiate bud development quickly enough for an abundant yield in September. Even if harsh weather circumstances require harvesting before all plants reach full maturity, they will still deliver a satisfying amount of resin-coated buds.
Greenhouse with basic heating: Recommended for exceptionally cold areas or above 55°N (for example Scandinavia, Russia).

Indoor: One of our breeding goals is to ensure that our strains are flexible and stable so that plants can be raised indoor and undergo the light stress of switching between artificial lighting and sunlight. It is therefore possible to start your garden indoor and shift the plants outdoor for flowering. Cloning and regenerating Mandala #1 is easy. Since this strain has a high percentage of landrace genetics that were adapted to growing on nutrient poor soil, the plants subsist easily in good horticultural grade potting soil and require little feeding if any. We recommend to provide an adequate pot size for healthy growth. Height is average and even the sativa pheno can be accomodated in small indoor spaces if a 12/12 light period is started early. A Sea of Green style cultivation is best with the Indica phenotype or with clones (rather than from seed) of both phenos. All plants are suitable for SCROG and other forms of training.

Purple Paro Valley

World Exclusive Genetics

Purple Paro Valley was developed from a landrace Sativa that originates from the Paro Valley in West Bhutan at an altitude of 2.500 meters. The feminised hybrid is only two generations removed from the wild habitat. In this region the landrace has adapted to the harsh Himalayan climate of extended dry spells, monsoon rain, and cold winters. Purple Paro Valley (PPV) is recommended for cultivation in northern climates up to 56°N, or where high humidity is a concern. With global warming making outdoor cultivation increasingly unpredictable this resilient landrace hybrid can meet the challenge.

Thanks to her extreme durability she can cope with low temperatures better than most modern cannabis strains. At first glance her flexible branches look somewhat fragile and willowy. But the local Paro landrace can withstand strong wind. For the most part, Purple Paro Valley has inherited this feature. Nevertheless, it is recommended to support the plants if a storm is expected and not to wait and see! The mold resistance of the pure landrace and PPV is exceptionally high. The plants are also quite nutrient-efficient. Hybridising the landrace was essential to improve yield. Growing a large multi-branch plant will enhance yield further.

During flowering most plants develop a delicious spicy and green lime aroma. The citrus/lime scent is typical of the Paro landrace. But there is one type of plant that stands out and we call her “candy girl”, because she smells just like sugary candy! When you crumble the dry buds they release a sweet, minty scent with a touch of hazelnut. The green phenotype tends towards lavender. The terpene linalool is responsible for the lavender scent and enhances the sedative, sleep enhancing effects, as well contributing to pain relief. Some of the purple plants can also smell like black tea, but the smoke still leaves a fresh, minty aftertaste on the exhale. PPV hash oil has the fresh, sweet, balsamic aroma of Himalayan cedar wood. The high is predominantly very relaxing or couch lock. It’s suitable for winding down, as a sleep aid, great to relieve hyperactivity and nervousness.

Although the mother genetics are homogenous it did not turn out this way with the current feminised strain. This doesn’t have to be an undesirable factor. Diversity is an evolutionary strategy in nature to ensure survival. For that purpose, the diversity in PPV can play an important role in securing your harvest. We differentiate mainly between the green and the purple phenotype. The purple phenotype accounts for approx. 75% of the population and is very attractive and fascinating to watch during flowering. However, what ratio you get between green/purple largely depends on the amount of plants you are growing. A small number will give you a more slanted result. The green pheno is shorter in height, finishes flowering earlier, and the buds are also more compact. The purple phenotype has long internodes, which has to be taken into account when growing in containers or a greenhouse. Late planting and pruning is recommended in both situations. In a Mediterranean or hot climate the plants grow between 1.50 (green pheno) to 2 meters in containers if they are planted in June (northern hemisphere) and left unpruned. If a moderate size is desired, we recommend timing the planting season to allow for just one month vegetative growth. During this vegetative period pruning the main growing tip once should be sufficient. Purple Paro Valley responds well to LST (low stress training). Trimming the bottom shoots further simplifies plant care and increases the strength of the upper branches.

Purple Paro Valley is especially suitable as a “back-up strain” in unfavourable climates. For example, a few PPV plants can be combined with a higher yielding strain for the north such as our Mandala #1. In very difficult locations, or in a season with exceptionally bad weather, Purple Paro Valley is perhaps the only reliable choice. Where other varieties have already failed before, there is still hope with this special strain! For guerrilla cultivation she is also an attractive choice because hardly any other strain requires such low maintenance.

Berry Bomb

  • Description
  • Specifications

Berry Bomb is a special cross of a hand selected Blueberry mother with the all powerful Bomb #1 father. The result is outstanding; think Blueberry, but bigger yields, more THC and we think a better taste. The influence of our Bomb #1 strain gives Berry Bomb explosive growth while making the strain much easier to grow (both indoors and out) and easier to trim than the original. This strain produces a fat dominant single kola with large internodal distances and the characteristic explosive bomb upward growth. This is an excellent choice for SCROG. Indoors the plant will stay of medium height but outdoors this beauty can get huge. Like most purple/blue strains, Berry Bomb will turn blue under correct conditions (i.e. cooler, lower temperatures at night). It is considered to have good mould resistance. At harvest, buds are super frosty with a sweet berry perfume and taste. Delivering a classic indica high with some sativa qualities thanks to the Blueberry mother.

Biddy Early

  • Description
  • Specifications

Biddy Early is the first outdoor cannabis strain from Serious Seeds. It's probably one of the best for outdoor cultivation in western European countries. As the name suggests already Biddy Early finishes very early, while it has also a very good resistance against mould, so perfectly suited for outdoor growing in the Dutch or similar climate. If the temperature is low, the plants will show red and purple colours. Biddy Early can reach a height of 2 meters under normal circumstances. Although Biddy Early is a fantastic plant to grow outdoors, it's also a good variety to grow indoors. Biddy Early has a great will to flower though, so keeping mothers in a vegetative state is very difficult, sometimes even impossible. Biddy Early has a sweet smell and a strong high.

Frisian Duck

  • Description
  • Specifications
Frisian Duck from Dutch Passion grows with unusually shaped leaves making it difficult to identify as traditional cannabis and ideal for outdoor and greenhouse growing in populated areas. The name refers to the distinctive leaf shape which looks like a ducks footprint especially during the first two thirds of her life. During bloom some upper leaves may show the more traditional cannabis shape. Frisian Duck comes from crossing Frisian Dew with Ducks Foot. This unique, robust, stealthy variety is ready to harvest at the start of October (start of April in Southern Hemisphere). She can show beautiful purple colours during flowering and grows like a Christmas tree, outdoors up to 2.5 meters, indoors up to 1.5 meters. Frisian Duck produces compact buds with spicy aromas of pine, citrus and fresh forest. The taste is similar with a good quality high and a refreshing Sativa head-buzz with average yields. She was created for outdoor growing but also does well indoors. Frisian Duck is a unique cannabis plant in disguise; tough and easy to grow, perfect for less experienced growers. Frisian Duck grows without being recognisable as cannabis for large parts of its life. Anyone that has a quiet sunny corner in their garden, greenhouse or the countryside will now find it easier than ever to grow their own cannabis.

It is a three way hybrid of Vanilla Kush, White Rhino and our original Bomb #1, making it extremely potent and one of the most exciting new genetic crosses available. The finished buds are incredibly resinous and are covered in a thick bed of ice white crystals full of THC. When cured they have an intense flavour and smell that is an appealing blend of chocolate with hints of vanilla. Ice Bomb is indica dominant, staying quite short but also extending outwards to form a fantastic bushy plant that will tend to produce a large single kola, whilst still producing heavy yielding side branches. During flowering the buds and leaves can develop a purple sheen making it particularly attractive. Ice Bomb is very consistent and hardy and it will grow well even in difficult or less favourable conditions. This strain is ideal indoor & out and will thrive in SOG and SCROG systems. Jill at TGA Seeds was lucky enough to be gifted this amazing Orange Skunk and the day we smoked the finished bud we knew we had to outcross it with our Space Queen male. You don't really have to be a master breeder to figure out orange, pineapple and mango will be a good combination. The resulting outcross is remarkably stable and is close to a 50/50 representation of the parents. Topped only once it grows into a nice short bush with lots of side branching and multi heads. Flavors range from orange, Tang, candy, mango, and apple. The cross works really well in SOG or SCROG. Very large stems and huge top colas make this an easy strain to grow in any medium. We had 5 females in our bud room and 4 could be cloned. They possess the same height, same growth speed and all have that dank orange smell. Very good as a mood elevator along with a feeling of general euphoria are experienced while high on this cross. Lime green with vibrant orange hairs and with temperature drops it can turn a deep burgundy to maroon.
